I’m just back from the Textiles Intersections conference in London, where we presented our work so far on live coding Digital Norway’s TC2 Loom. . The paper shares our experience hacking the TC2 for live interaction by treating it like a dynamic shaft loom. It was amazing to meet the TC2’s inventor Vibeke Vestby at the conference — there were rumours of efforts to create a semi-official API for the loom, which I hope to get involved with. Anyway a real pleasure to collaborate with Pei Lin, Femke Vorselen, Kristina Andersen and the rest of the team on this, looking forward to the next steps!
Textiles Intersections was a fun and well organised conference, and great to hang out with fibre art friends, many I’d not met in person. In the run-up fellow Sheffield Pattern Club organiser Lucy Cheesman and I linked up with the local live coding scene to plan an algorave the night before the conference. The event was themed around deceleration, where we gradually slow the tempo down through the night, to create a space for thinking about resistance to far right accelerationist technology. Lucy and I ended up collaborating with top weaver and technologist Laura Devendorf on a live coded 20 BPM set towards the end of the night, with Laura using her incredible AdaCAD software to create live visuals. There was a live stream but I guess you had to be there.. It was a lot of fun!
